What Is Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is a deeply therapeutic form of bodywork rooted in Japanese tradition. The word Shiatsu translates as "finger pressure", however shiatsu offers much more than simple massage.

Drawing on the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Shiatsu works with the body’s energy system, using gentle pressure on specific points (known as tsubos) along pathways called meridians. These are the same channels used in acupuncture, but without needles. The aim is to support the smooth flow of energy (or Qi) throughout the body, restoring balance and promoting healing.

What sets Shiatsu apart is its holistic approach. It blends Eastern philosophy — including Zen and Five Element theory — with modern insights from psychology and physiology. As a practitioner, Matt looks at the whole person, not just isolated symptoms. Physical discomfort, emotional tension, and energetic imbalances are all interconnected and Shiatsu works across these layers to support deeper wellbeing.
