What We're Looking for in a Yoga Teacher Trainee on our North Somerset Course
(I'll say it again: It’s not about being the bendiest in the room)
If you’re thinking about becoming a yoga teacher—or simply feeling the pull to dive deeper into your practice—you might be wondering if you’re “ready.”
Let me be clear: I’m not looking for perfection. You don’t need to be able to chant the Yoga Sutra by heart - or, in fact, at all, or twist yourself into eye-watering contortions. Chaturanga isn't on the list of criteria. What I am looking for is something quite different.

.
Here’s what I’m hoping to find in a 200 hour yoga teacher trainee:
1. Openmindedness
Yoga invites us to question, explore, and unlearn. I’m looking for people who are willing to step into the unknown, stay curious, and meet new ideas (and themselves) with soft eyes. You don’t have to know it all—just be willing to listen, learn, and grow.
2. A Genuine Love of Yoga
Not just the poses—but the whole glorious, ancient, layered system. You don’t have to be “spiritual” or scholarly. But yoga touches you in some deep way. Maybe it’s helped you through hard times. Maybe it’s how you make sense of the world. You feel its power—and you want to go deeper.
3. A Desire to Put the Pieces Together
Perhaps you’ve done bits here and there—a class on anatomy, a chant that made you cry, a book that stirred something. Now you’re longing to connect the dots. To see how breath, body, mind, mantra, philosophy and presence all fit together like a beautiful, imperfect jigsaw puzzle.
4. A Wish to Share Yoga’s Transformative Power (In Your Own Way)
If you do want to teach, I’m not looking for clones. I’m looking for people who want to share yoga from the heart. People who want to honour the tradition and be authentic to themselves. Whether you’re drawn to teach in studios, hospitals, schools, or community spaces—or just want to live and embody yoga more fully—I welcome your unique path.
If that sounds like you, then we might just be a good fit.
This training isn’t about becoming a “perfect” yoga teacher. It’s about deepening your relationship with yoga, and allowing that relationship to shape the way you live, move, teach, and connect.
Our next 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training starts in January at The Phoenix Studio in Somerset, near Bristol.
Early bird pricing ends in September. If you’re curious, reach out—I’d love to hear from you.
