Yoga for Cancer Training

Daily Schedule

Day 1

  • An overview of the disease itself and an exploration of our own preconceptions and attitudes.

  • An overview of different cancers

  • Types of treatment and how they may affect the participant.

  • The specific benefits of yoga and mindfulness for cancer.

  • Beyond treatment. The cancer journey and its impact on the whole person and their loved ones.

  • A yoga class for cancer: 75 min class. A sample of what week 1 of your course may look like. 


Day 2

  • Yoga class for cancer- a sample of week 3 of a course for cancer

  • The shoulder girdle and how it can be affected by breast cancer surgery

  • The core muscles and how they can be affected by cancer surgery 

  • Lymphodoema, lymph and the immune system

  • Therapeutic movement for shoulders, core and lymph flow.

  • Restorative yoga and yoga nidra adapted for cancer

  • Restorative yoga class with Morven


Day 3

  • A yoga class for cancer - a sample of week 7 of a course for cancer

  • Forming a group comprising people with cancer, working one to one and integrating people with cancer into your classes

  • Designing and teaching your course for cancer

  • Practicum. Peer to peer teaching practice.

  • Working holistically with people with life threatening illness. Ethics, compassion and the whole person

  • Pranayama, relaxation and meditation. Using mantra with your students.

 

Days 4 and 5

  • An introduction to mindfulness for health

  • The core concepts

  • Key mindfulness practices

  • Mindful movement

  • Teaching practice

  • Incorporating mindfulness into your yoga classes

  • Use of language and metaphor in teaching

  • Visualisation

  • Preparation for ongoing study
